WHAT IS DEF AND WHY DO I NEED IT?
Commencing January 2010, stringent diesel emissions standards were legislated by the US EPA and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). To meet these standards,OEM’s have had to adopt new diesel engine technologies. Most are using SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology to achieve the reduced toxic emissions levels. DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid, a high purity Urea based solution that is necessary in vehicles with the SCR technology in order to meet these emissions standards.
HOW DOES DEF WORK?
DEF helps convert NOx (nitrogen oxide) from diesel exhaust into nitrogen and water vapor, by being injected into the diesel exhaust and then through the catalyst to rid the exhaust of pollutants.
HOW MUCH DO I NEED?
The amount of DEF necessary is approximately 3% of the amount of diesel fuel your vehicle consumes.
WHAT’S THE SCR ADVANTAGE?
Most experts agree that DEF reduces fuel consumption of SCR equipped engines by up to five percent.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I RUN OUT OF DEF FLUID?
Your vehicle should have a separate display gauge for DEF fluid. Should you run out, your vehicle will not stop immediately however your vehicle will de-rate to a very slow speed until you fill up with DEF. If you turn off a vehicle that has run out of DEF, it will not start again unless you have put in more DEF.
HOW DO I STORE DEF?
H2Blu DEF should be stored only in HDPE plastic or stainless steel containers, out of direct sunlight and optimally between 0ºC and 30ºC. Prolonged storage over 30ºC will degrade the product. DEF is corrosive to some metals so care must be taken to store it properly to ensure the purity and efficacy of the product.
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT FREEZES?
DEF will freeze at -11ºC. If frozen the DEF will not be compromised, as it will remain in solution. The engine will still start and run if the DEF is frozen since a DEF tank heater will ensure that it thaws quickly. DEF will expand about 7% when frozen but the OEM has taken that into account in the tank design. For more details, refer to our website H2Blu.ca
IS DEF HAZARDOUS?
H2Blu is a controlled product under WHMIS. Should it come into contact with your skin, eyes or even your vehicle, you should still rinse thoroughly with water. Wearing clean gloves when dispensing should ensure that the DEF will not get contaminated. For more details, please refer to our website, H2Blu.ca
IS ALL DEF THE SAME?
High quality DEF sold in North America must pass ISO 22241 and be approved by the API. All packages must show the API label to show approved and consistent purity and quality. Pure DEF optimizes your usage and protects your engine best. DEF is defined by AUS-32 specifications and the specifications meet or exceed the DIN 70070 August 2005 quality standard, the DIN V 70071 June 2005 analytical standard and the ISO 22141-1 2006 standard.
IS DEF MEASUREMENT AS RIGOROUSLY MONITORED AS DIESEL FUEL?
Yes but if you’re purchasing from a retailer, make sure that their meter or dispenser has been certified by Measurement Canada, the arm of the Federal government mandated to ensure fair and accurate commercial metering. If the dispenser doesn’t have Measurement Canada’s approval you could be getting less than you paid for.
HOW BIG IS A TRUCK’S DEF TANK?
The size of a DEF tank can vary depending on the manufacturer. DEF tanks range from 17 litres to 87 litres, also depending on the purpose of the vehicle.
HOW FAR CAN I TRAVEL ON A TANK OF DEF?
DEF will be dosed at approximately three percent (from on-board tanks ranging anywhere between 17 and 87 litres, depending on the application) A full 87 L tank might get you across Canada and back. On a smaller, medium-duty truck, with an 18 L DEF tank, you could probably travel about 3,000 km
DOES DEF SMELL? WILL IT MAKE MY GARAGE UNPLEASANT?
No. As long as it remains packaged, you will not smell DEF. However, it does contain 32.5 percent urea, which smells like ammonia and if it spills, it can be cleaned up easily and quickly with hose water.
HOW MUCH DOES DEF COST?

IS IT EASY TO ERR AND PUT DIESEL FUEL INTO THE DEF TANK?
No. The DEF dispensing nozzle is 19 mm. The standard diesel fuel nozzle diameter is 22mm. In addition, the tank cap for the DEF tank will be blue to further differentiate it from the diesel tank.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I PUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEF INTO THE TANK?
The dashboard DEF indicator light will appear notifying the driver and depending on the level of contamination in the tank, the vehicle may require servicing. The same thing will happen if a driver tries to “top up” DEF with water.
HOW WILL DEF AFFECT A TRUCK’S REGULAR MAINTENANCE?
DEF will not impact a truck’s regular routines except that at every 250,000 km or so, the DPF filter will need changing. It takes minutes.
WHY IS PURITY IMPORTANT?
The purity of your DEF product is critical as impurities will cause the fluid not to work properly. This may mean:
- Your vehicle may not be meeting the emissions standards.
- Your engine may use more fluid than required.
- You may not achieve optimum fuel consumption.
- You may damage your engine over prolonged use of a compromised product.
